A 28-year-old Puna man is in custody for allegedly shooting his housemate Sunday afternoon.

According to a Hawaii Police Department statement, officers responded at 2:23 p.m. to a North Road home in Mountain View on a report of a man who had been shot.

The 24-year-old victim, who lives at the home, was found in the yard with a gunshot wound to his head. He was originally taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to Oahu in critical condition.

Police arrested Mahdi Hemmat, who resides at the same address, at the scene. He was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives investigate the shooting as a second-degree attempted murder.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Hemmat had not been charged by mid-afternoon Monday.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
